The Opening of the Exhibition “It’s Always Tea-time“ in Gdansk, Poland

international-exhibition-its-always-tea-timeThe exhibition “It’s Always Tea-Time”, which has been travelling around Northern Europe since October 2015 has travelled on to The Baltic Sea Cultural Centre in Gdansk, Poland. The opening of the exhibition takes places on the 13th May.

The exhibition “It’s Always Tea-Time” is inspired by Lewis Carroll’s book Alice in Wonderland, which celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2015. It was organised by the Estonian curator and illustrator Viive Noor from the Estonian Children’s Literature Centre. Noor invited her artist friends from all over the world to have tea with Alice. Seventy-two artists from 19 countries accepted the invitation.

The title of the exhibition alludes to the famous tea-drinking scene in the book. Most of the pictures depict the mad tea party, but there are also artists who have taken a broader approach.

Curator Viive Noor: ‘Most of these artists are among the world’s best illustrators and their works have not previously been displayed in Estonia, nor in the entire Baltic Sea region. It is likely that the works of many won’t reach these parts again soon, so if you want to find out what is happening in the great world and what the artists of distant countries are thinking about, here is your chance to come and see for yourself. These are original illustrations that are always worth a look. In addition, all the works have been made especially for this exhibition, so you will never see these images in books.’

The exhibition will be shown in The Baltic Sea Cultural Centre until the 8th June. From there it continues its tour around Europe, moving on to Germany, Hungary, Russia and Italy. Previous stops have been the Estonian Children’s Literature Centre in Tallinn, Estonia, the National Library of Latvia in Riga, Latvia and the Crusell Cultural Centre in Uusikaupunki, Finland.

The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue.

Parallel to the exhibition, the Baltic Meetings of Illustrators will take place in Gdansk. It is accompanied by lectures, workshops and meetings with the artists. For more information, see here.
