Mamma’s birthday is at the end of summer. The guests bring presents for Mamma—and for the little boy, too—even though his birthday is in winter. The little boy loves birthdays very much, but Mamma doesn’t. She doesn’t like getting older. She doesn’t care for a birthday party or visitors.
The little boy asks Pappa if Mamma could stay the same age if there wouldn’t be a birthday party.
“Of course not,” he answers. “No one can escape growing older.”
“Well then, what’s the difference? We might as well celebrate.” says the boy.
Pappa agrees. He still remembers how Mamma used to dance to the early hours of the morning, run faster than anyone else and ride a motorbike…
The boy finds it hard to believe his Mamma ever did those things.
“No one is just what they seem on the outside,” says Pappa. “We are all full of striped and swirly within.”
They decide to organise a perfect party for Mamma.
